URU President Godwin Kayangwe Reaffirms National Ambition Ahead of Rugby Africa Cup 2025

As Uganda gears up to host the Rugby Africa Cup 2025 from July 8–19 at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, Namboole, Uganda Rugby Union President Mr. Godwin Kayangwe has expressed confidence in the nation’s readiness to deliver a world-class tournament and rally the country behind the Rugby Cranes’ quest for World Cup qualification.

Speaking during the official partner engagement and media launch, Mr. Kayangwe reaffirmed Uganda’s pride in once again playing host to Africa’s top rugby nations, following a successful outing in 2024.

“Last year, Uganda proved to the continent that we have what it takes to host top-tier rugby. In 2025, we are doing it again—only this time, the stakes are higher. This isn’t just a tournament. It’s Uganda’s journey to the Rugby World Cup,” he said.

Mr. Kayangwe emphasized that the upcoming Rugby Africa Cup is more than a sporting event— it is a national moment. Uganda will not only serve as host but also as a strong contender for the sole African slot at the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

The tournament will kick off with a thrilling East African derby between Uganda and Kenya, a match that promises to electrify fans and set the tone for the competition.

He further highlighted the deep partnership with government and commercial sponsors, including MTN Uganda, Nile Special, RockBoom, and NBS Sport, noting that their unwavering support is essential to the success of the tournament.

“We are deeply grateful for the trust and commitment shown by our partners and the Government of Uganda. Their support goes beyond logistics—it reflects a shared belief in what rugby can do for this country in terms of unity, youth empowerment, and international visibility.”

One of the most anticipated moments of the tournament will be the presence of the Webb Ellis Trophy—the official Rugby World Cup trophy, which will be displayed at the stadium for fans to experience in person. This marks a historic first for Uganda and is expected to inspire fans and players alike.

“Having the Webb Ellis Trophy at our venue is not just symbolic—it’s inspirational. It brings the dream closer. It says to every Ugandan fan, ‘This is what we are playing for. This is possible.’”

The Rugby Africa Cup 2025 will feature eight of the continent’s top rugby nations in a knockout format, with the winner securing a direct ticket to the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the runner-up earning a place in the global repechage tournament.

With the stage set, President Kayangwe called on Ugandans across the country to unite behind the Rugby Cranes and fill Namboole as the team seeks to make history.

“This is our tournament. This is our moment. Let’s show up, cheer loud, and stand together. The world will be watching, and Uganda will rise.”
