The Uganda Cup 2025 burst into life this past weekend, delivering a dramatic mix of record-breaking performances and hard-fought battles that set a thrilling tone for the season.
The most staggering result came from the Pirates, who sent a clear message to all contenders with an astonishing 154-09 victory over the Kigezi Silverbacks. Their historic points haul was nearly matched by the Toyota Buffaloes, who powered to a commanding 63-07 away win against Kyadondo.
While some teams ran riot, the defending champions, Heathens, were forced to grind. In a physical and tense encounter at Kyadondo Grounds, they were pushed hard by a resilient Impis side that even led briefly in the first half before the Heathens rallied to secure a 29-06 win. Newly appointed coach Tolbert Onyango acknowledged the challenge, stating, “Impis were very tough, as the scoreline shows. We had to dig deep.”
The drama continued elsewhere as the Hippos won a back-and-forth thriller against the Gulu City Falcons 38-33, while the Mongers, and Rhinos also secured opening-day victories.
The women’s competition was equally compelling, headlined by a phenomenal display from the Avengers, who stormed to an 81-00 win over the Kigezi Queens. In two tightly contested matches that went down to the wire, the Ewes narrowly pipped the She Wolves 15-13, and the Panthers edged out the Nile Rapids 16-12.
With statement wins, narrow escapes, and high-octane action from the very first round, the Uganda Cup promise an unforgettable season of rugby.
