U20 Rugby Cranes face Zimbabwe Junior Sables tomorrow, 16hrs EAT at Muteesa II stadium, Wankulukuku. A first taste to what Rugby Africa’s U20 Performance Division has to offer.

Uganda head into the fixture with renewed confidence after securing promotion to the Performance Division through tHE 2026 Rugby Africa Barthes Trophy. The Junior Rugby Cranes completed a two match sweep over Zambia in the First Division, winning the opening leg 81–00 before claiming the second fixture 27–12. The promotion now places Uganda among the 4 dominant countries in the category together with Kenya, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe provide a step up.

Zimbabwe will present a different challenge in Uganda’s preparations. The Junior Sables competed in the Performance Division, opening their tournament with a 35–23 defeat to Kenya before recovering to beat Tunisia 38–12, the win solidified Zimbabwe’s stay in the Performance division as a competitive opponent and one worth a test with.

For Uganda, Saturday’s Test will be an opportunity to measure the progress made during the tournament and assess the standards required on their return to the Performance Division.

Head coach Martial Tchumcam has stressed that promotion is only the beginning. Uganda must now improve its physical preparation, accuracy, discipline and defensive organisation if the team is to compete effectively at the next level.

The Junior Rugby Cranes showed strong attacking form against Zambia, scoring 108 points across the two legs. However, the coaching staff will expect greater efficiency in front of the posts and more composure when chances arise against Zimbabwe.

The match will also serve as a final assessment for a group of players viewed as part of Uganda’s long term senior Rugby Cranes pathway. Their ability to cope with Zimbabwe’s physicality, tempo and decision making demands will provide valuable insight into the work required before Uganda begins its Performance Division campaigns in the coming years.
