The Late Sydney Gongodyo, a proud servant of the game, a fierce competitor, and a respected teammate, who represented the very best of Ugandan Rugby both in club colours, and in national service.

Whether wearing the Stanbic Black Pirates jersey or representing the Rugby Cranes, Sydney carried himself with courage, humility and unwavering commitment. His performances on the field embodied the core values of our sport — discipline, resilience, teamwork and sacrifice. He gave his all every time he stepped onto the pitch. His work ethic and determination inspired teammates, coaches and supporters alike.
During his time with the Stanbic Black Pirates, Sydney played a central role in one of the club’s most successful eras. His leadership and consistency helped secure numerous trophies and honours that now form part of Pirates’ proud history. His achievements for club and country will remain a permanent part of Uganda rugby’s story.

The circumstances surrounding Sydney’s death have left the rugby community heartbroken and shocked. As we mourn a life cut short, we are reminded of the importance of justice, humanity and respect for every life. Sydney’s passing is a loss not only to rugby but to the nation he proudly represented.
To the Gongodyo family we extend our deepest condolences, and prayers. May you find strength in the memories of a life well lived and comfort in knowing that Sydney’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of rugby players.
Though the final whistle has blown, Sydney’s spirit will forever remain part of Uganda Rugby. Your jersey may be folded and your boots laid to rest, but your legacy will continue to march with every Rugby Crane, and every Pirate who takes to the field.
