The Uganda National 7s team, has embarked on a new journey under the guidance of newly appointed team Care Taker, Otim Allan. In an exclusive insight into his vision, Coach Otim has laid out a compelling blueprint for the team’s future, one that balances a disciplined structure with creative freedom and a profound connection to the nation’s fans.
Otim’s own rugby story began not on the rugby pitch, but on a baseball diamond. His conversion to the sport came in 2001, orchestrated by a pivotal figure in Ugandan rugby. “A gentleman called Ramsey Olinga, who is the Chief Technical Officer of Uganda rugby now… was responsible for me joining rugby,” Otim shared. “He made us join the 7s format; it was more of speed, creativity, and emphasis on individual brilliance within a team. That was one of the reasons that made me stick to the 7s format. 7s became part of me.”

This deep-seated love for the game’s 7s variant now directly informs his coaching philosophy. He describes it as a careful equilibrium. “My coaching philosophy is a balance between structured and disciplinarian as well as player empowerment,” he stated. While he values non-negotiables like hard work, accountability, and respect, he equally believes in “creating an environment where players can feel trusted and motivated to express themselves.” For Otim, unlocking a player’s best comes from them enjoying the process and buying into a shared vision.
When defining success, his perspective extends beyond the trophy cabinet. While victories are desired, a truly successful first season for him would be marked by “constant improvement in our performance, players growing into confidence, and the team identifying themselves with the fans.”
His primary goal is to lay a “strong foundation for sustainable success,” believing that a strong team culture and growth will naturally translate into winning results.
This message of balance and passion was the first one he delivered to his new squad. His instruction was simple yet powerful: to give everything, respect the game, and never forget the honour of representing Uganda. He urged them to play for the love of their country and the sport, and crucially, to “enjoy yourself and make it count.”
Finally, Coach Otim had a direct and heartfelt message for the lifeblood of the team: the fans. Acknowledging them as the “unwavering support” and “heartbeat of this team,” he promised a product they can be proud of.
“Let them expect to see us play with passion, courage, and flair,” he declared. “We will fight for every ball, every tackle, every try because we know that we carry your hopes with us. Stay behind us and together, we’ll write a new and exciting chapter for Ugandan rugby.”
With a clear philosophy and a unifying vision, the Otim Allen era has begun, promising a brand of rugby that is as disciplined as it is thrilling.
The Rugby Cranes 7s both men and womens teams will be in action this weekend in the 2025 Safari 7s with the Men’s team under the watch of Otim Allan and team manager Micheal Wandera.
