Shaine Babirye, the Jinja based playmaker, who turns out for Nile Rapids RFC, a female club affiliated with Hippos Rugby Club has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in the game. Her recent recognition as Upcoming Player of the Year in the Uganda Rugby Awards Gala 2025 is not just a personal milestone, but a reflection of her rapid growth and influence on the pitch.

Babirye’s journey into rugby began almost by chance during her primary school days in Jinja. “I got into rugby around Primary 5 when I was introduced to tag rugby at Narambai Primary School, and I quickly fell in love with the game,” she recalls. What started as a casual introduction soon evolved into a passion, especially after she discovered her calling in the halfback roles.
“What really drew me in was the speed of decision-making and the responsibility that comes with playing flyhalf or scrumhalf,” she explains. “You’re always involved, controlling the tempo, making key decisions, and connecting the team. That challenge is what made me stay and grow with Nile Rapids.”
Before rugby, Babirye had a background in football, but she found herself craving a more demanding sport. “Football was good, but I wanted something more physical and mentally engaging. Rugby gave me that complete challenge—it tested both my body and mind,” she says. Though the transition wasn’t easy, especially adapting to contact play and tactical awareness, she embraced the learning curve and quickly found her footing.
A major turning point in her development came in 2024 when she earned a call-up to the U20 Lady Cranes. The experience exposed her to elite training environments and the demands of international rugby. “Representing your country changes your mindset. It built my confidence and prepared me for senior-level rugby,” Babirye notes.
Her performances over the past year have underlined that growth. From winning gold at the FEASSA Games in Kakamega with Jinja Secondary School to standout displays in the Entebbe leg of the national 7s circuit, Babirye has consistently delivered. In the 15s format, her game management and kicking accuracy have become defining traits.

One of her proudest achievements came in 2025 when she was named in the Nile Special 7s Series Women’s Team of the Series—a recognition reserved for the competition’s most impactful players. Among the many matches she’s played, one encounter stands out: Nile Rapids versus Avengers.
“That game really tested me,” she reflects. “It demanded composure under pressure, quick decisions, and smart territory management. It showed me that I can perform consistently at a high level, not just in moments.”
Despite the accolades, Babirye remains grounded. “Winning the Upcoming Player award is an honour, but I don’t see it as beating anyone. It’s recognition of hard work and the support I’ve received from my coaches and teammates,” she says. “It motivates me to keep pushing because there’s still so much more to achieve.”
Looking ahead, her ambitions are clear. At club level, she aims to help Nile Rapids remain competitive among the top sides. On a personal level, she is focused on becoming a more complete player, refining her game management, strengthening her leadership, and delivering consistently in big matches.
Her ultimate goal is to cement a place in the senior Lady Rugby Cranes setup and contribute on the international stage. Beyond her own career, Babirye is passionate about growing the women’s game in Uganda.
“I want to inspire more young girls to take up rugby and believe they can succeed,” she says. “It’s not just about playing well, but also about mentorship and visibility—helping the sport grow both on and off the field.”

Balancing academics with the demands of competitive rugby remains a challenge, but one she handles with discipline. “It’s not easy, but planning helps. When I’m training, I focus fully. When I’m studying, I do the same. It’s about sacrifice and priorities, and both rugby and education matter to me.”
As women’s rugby in Uganda continues to gain momentum, Shaine Babirye represents the next generation—skilled, determined, and driven by purpose. Her journey is only just beginning, but the signs are clear: this is a player destined for even greater heights.
