Reigning Champions Platinum Credit Heathens RFC Begin Title Defence with Calm Confidence

Heathens, the reigning champions of the Uganda Cup, step onto the pitch tomorrow not just to defend a title, but to unveil a new identity. In their first match, all eyes will be on Coach Tolbert and his squad as they face Impis RFC marking the beginning of their campaign to reclaim the coveted trophy.

In an exclusive interview ahead of the final, the mood from the Heathens camp was notably calm and focused, a testament to the steady hand of their new coach, Tolbert, who brings experience from the international stage.

When asked about the pressure of a domestic Cup compared to the international arena, Coach Tolbert’s response was,” At the moment, no pressure,” he stated, redirecting the focus inward. “Just trying to ensure the guys can give us a good game.” This relaxed demeanor underscores a confident camp in its preparation, not burdened by past glories only focused on the future.

That preparation is built on a fresh foundation. Unlike many who might lean on proven systems, Tolbert confirmed that his strategy for tomorrow is a complete departure. “This is a completely new blueprint, a clean slate, and we are looking to put our best foot forward tomorrow,” he revealed. This signals a clear intent to build a distinct legacy, untethered from previous game plans.

The squad tasked with executing this new vision is a compelling blend of seasoned veterans and exciting young talent. Coach Tolbert was quick to highlight the continuous growth within his ranks. “Quite a number of guys have grown,” he noted, pointing to the leadership of the “old dogs” like Michael Wokorach, Aaron Ofoyrwoth, and Norbert Sexton, while also expressing excitement about the potential of younger stars like Patrick Okello, and Julius Oyok, the 7s series top try scorer and more.

With a team still blending together, Tolbert identified the most significant area of improvement, not in physicality, but in intellect. “The biggest improvement as a team I think is in terms of our own analysis of our team,” he said, acknowledging that this first game will be the true benchmark for their progress.

Facing a dynamic, youthful Impis side known for their running rugby, the tactical battle will be intriguing. The coach knows the challenge ahead is to “play catch-up or stop them in their tracks.”

But beyond any strategy or individual performance, Coach Tolbert has a simple request for the legion of Heathens fans. He wants them to see the heart of the team. “The fans should notice the effort, the drive and the passion the boys have for playing for the team.”

As the new dawn breaks on the Heathens’ season, the message is clear: while the goal remains victory, the path to get there is brand new.  It’s a new blueprint, built on a mix of experience and youth, and driven by a collective passion that they hope will once again lead them to glory.
