RELEGATION PLAYOFFS ROUND 2, What’s At Stake?

The Uganda Rugby Premiership Relegation Playoffs enter decisive Round 2 on Saturday, with Warriors and Hippos requiring significant comebacks to avoid relegation after Rhinos and Kakira Simbas secured commanding aggregate leads in Round 1.

WARRIORS 12–34 RHINOS (Round 1 Aggregate)

Round 2: Rhinos vs Warriors, 23rd May 2026 | Kyambogo Rugby Grounds

Warriors face a substantial challenge in Round 2, requiring a 23-point victory to overturn Rhinos’ aggregate lead. The winless side have been officially designated hosts but will contest both legs at Kyambogo, Rhinos’ home ground, after Round 1 was relocated from 5D Ranch.

Rhinos, who finished ninth in the regular season, secured a 22-point cushion through set-piece dominance and tactical discipline. Despite a difficult campaign, Rhinos delivered a composed and structured performance in Round 1 to take control of the tie and extending their unbeaten record against Warriors, who failed to beat them in the regular-season meeting and the first round of the quarters.

Match equation: Warriors must win by 23+ points. Rhinos retain Premiership status with a draw or loss by 21 points or fewer.

KAKIRA SIMBAS 22–6 HIPPOS (Round 1 Aggregate)

Round 2: Hippos vs Kakira Simbas, 23rd May 2026 | The Ruck Yard

Hippos require a 17 point victory to survive, playing their first home match of the playoff at The Ruck Yard after Round 1’s 22–6 defeat at Kakira. The side fell from last season’s finalists where they lost to Stanbic Black Pirates in extra time following an 80-minute draw to relegation contenders. For the first time since joining the Premiership in 2017, Hippos face the prospect of relegation. Saturday’s fixture at The Ruck Yard offers their best chance to rally. Home support gives them a fighting chance to mount a comeback, though they must overcome a 16-point deficit and a Kakira side that has thrived in the Jinja derby.

Kakira Simbas, Premiership rookies in their first season after promotion, hold a 16-point aggregate advantage. The coaching setup at Kakira includes familiarity with Hippos’ system, and the squad carries players who once wore the Hippos jersey — adding a personal edge to Saturday’s showdown.

Match equation: Hippos must win by 17+ points. Kakira retain Premiership status with a draw or loss by 15 points or fewer.

CONTEXT

Relegation playoffs operate under heightened psychological pressure compared to regular-season fixtures. Physicality intensifies, tactical discipline becomes paramount, and margin for error is minimal.

For Warriors, this represents the toughest and third consecutive season in the relegation zone. For Kakira Simbas, validation that promotion was merit-based. For Rhinos, survival after a disappointing campaign. For Hippos, the fight to maintain their Premiership status for the first time since joining the competition in 2017.
