Pirates Honour Sydney Gongodyo with Emotional Semi-Final Victory Over Heathens

Stanbic Black Pirates 15-3 Platinum Credit Heathens

Stanbic Black Pirates produced a spirited performance to defeat Platinum Credit Heathens 15-3 in the first leg of the Uganda Rugby Premiership semi-finals at Kyadondo rugby grounds yesterday, in a match played under the shadow of the tragic loss of former flanker Sydney Gongodyo.

The encounter was much more than a place in the final. It was an emotional occasion for the Sea Robbers, who were playing their first match since the passing of Gongodyo, one of the club’s most respected servants. Before kick-off, players, officials and supporters observed a moment of silence in honour of the retired No.7, whose jersey was permanently retired earlier in the week.

With emotions running high, the referee’s whistle signalled the start of an intense battle that would become a fitting tribute to the fallen Pirate. Every tackle, carry and turnover reflected the determination of a side eager to honour one of its own.

Pirates struck first through the boot of Nkore, who slotted a penalty to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Heathens had an opportunity to respond after earning a scrum penalty, but Matthew’s effort sailed wide.

The opening try came after sustained pressure from a Pirates scrum deep inside Heathens territory. The conversion was missed, but the Sea Robbers had stretched their advantage to 8-0. What followed before halftime was a fierce exchange of heavy collisions and relentless defence, with neither side willing to give an inch.

Heathens finally got on the scoreboard early in the second half when Matthew slotted a penalty from close range after Pirates were penalised for a high tackle. At 8-3, the home side sensed an opportunity, but Pirates responded in style.

Alex crossed for the visitors’ second try of the afternoon, and Nkore added the conversion to extend the lead to 15-3. Despite late pressure from Heathens, Pirates’ defence stood firm, repeatedly shutting down attacks and capitalising on their opponents’ handling errors.

When the final whistle sounded, it marked not only an important first-leg victory but also an emotional triumph for a club still mourning one of its own.

The 12-point advantage puts Pirates in a commanding position ahead of the return leg at Kings Park Arena, where they will look to finish the job and book a place in the final against Toyota Buffaloes.

Heathens fielded the players who had been available in training, with several senior players released from national Sevens duty not featuring in the squad. Their inclusion in the second leg could alter the complexion of the tie. Pirates, meanwhile, welcomed back several national team players who immediately returned to club duty and played their part in a memorable afternoon.

In the end, the victory belonged to the Sea Robbers, but above all, it belonged to Sydney Gongodyo — A Pirate whose legacy continues to inspire those who still wear the skull and crossbones.
