The 2025 Kabaka Coronation Rugby 7’s Cup was officially launched today at Bulange Mengo.
The Buganda Kingdom, and Uganda Rugby Union’s enduring partnership took center stage at the event highlighting rugby’s growing role in community development across Buganda. The occassion was graced by the Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, who emphasised the importance of the tournament, ” As a kingdom ,we place great importance on promoting sports. Not only to nurture talent, but also to foster unity, and improve the health of our people.”
This year’s Coronation anniversary carries a powerful theme; The fight against HIV/AIDs, with a strong call for men to take the lead in protecting women from infection. Following the #TUBEEREBALAMU health initiative which was launched by Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II in October 2024.
“You have to be healthy to participate in the game. HIV/AIDs is very dangerous. It is us, the men, who must lead in guarding against it. I’m happy that Uganda Rugby Union has organised the 7’s Cup. I am sure we are all going to enjoy this series.” the Katikiro added.
Prince David Wasajja, also a trustee of the Uganda Rugby Union further stated the importance of the partnership between the Uganda Rugby Union, and the Buganda kingdom in growing sports locally, and further advocated for a potential provision of land from Buganda Kingdom to the Uganda Rugby Union to grow the sport more.
When asked if they are bringing any new tactics or strategies to 7’s series 2025, Heathens RFC, also current title holders of the Nile Special Uganda 7s series 2024, represented by Trevor Ochan noted; “Its a secret, you just have to wait and see!”
When asked him if he had any messages for the fans , he’s response was, ” They should come and support rugby, they should come support their teams….All the best”, he concluded.
The Kabaka Coronation 7’s Cup will open the 2025 Nile Special Uganda 7’s series this weekend (2nd to 3rd August 2025) at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds. The thrilling tournament will see 16 Men’s rugby teams, and 8 women’s teams battle out for championship in circuit one of the adrenaline filled Nile Special Uganda 7’s series. For the first time, live Pools for the 7’s event were drawn yesterday via NBS Sport marking a key milestone in the state of Ugandan Rugby broadcasting.
Desire Derekford Mugumisa, chairman of the 7’s committee, stated that,” For us, the huge task is to map out what the future can be, 7’s Rugby has so far been our bread and butter, it is where we recruit the most number of fans. This is an opportunity for people to go out to the rugby pitch. It is a huge huge property.”
