Julius Oyuk: On the road to dominance!

At just 22 years old, Julius Oyuk has taken the national rugby 7s series by storm! The Heathens Rugby Club star has so far emerged as the top try scorer after 5 stops in the Nile Special Uganda Rugby 7s tournament with a solid 32 tries. We caught up with Julius to delve into his inspiring journey, passion for rugby, and secrets behind his success.

Julius’ love affair with rugby began at Kyadondo in primary two, where he was introduced to the sport through age-grade rugby programs. Coached by Evelyn Aweko, and Coach Peter Ochol (Coach Sky), young Julius was hooked from the start. His inspiration? Ugandan rugby legend Phillip Wokorach, who currently plays for Rugby Club Orleans in France.

As Julius progressed through the ranks, he first played for Tigers, then Stallions, and finally, Heathens all Kyadondo based teams. Each step of the way, he refined his skills, built his strength, and developed a deep understanding of the game. Today, he credits his success to teamwork, and resilience.

Julius shared a heartwarming moment when fans cheered his team on despite being behind in a game. This energy, he says, fuels his performances and drives him to make fans proud. Before each match, Julius prepares mentally by staying positive and confident, a mindset that has served him well throughout his growing career.

To young men and women playing rugby in Uganda, Julius offers valuable advice: “Stay disciplined, resilient, and play with courage. Rugby demands strength of body and mind.”
