Player Profile, Hussein Shein: From Pandemic Pause to Premiership Final

Balancing Rugby, Coaching, and Education

Toyota Buffaloes scrum-half Hussein Shein is among the brightest young talents in Ugandan Rugby. Away from the field, he coaches at Kyadondo Rugby Academy and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Networking and Cybersecurity at ISBAT University.

A Pandemic Detour

His rugby journey was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns. Living in Kyengera and unable to travel regularly to Kyadondo, Shein turned to football, which was more accessible. Although football became his focus, his love for rugby never faded.

Returning to Rugby

After high school, several of his friends had joined Toyota Buffaloes, while his former school coach, Onen, had taken charge of the club. Shein began attending training sessions before eventually deciding to fully commit to rugby following a setback in football—a decision he describes as life-changing.

Embracing Expectations

Being regarded as one of Uganda’s promising young scrum-halves is both humbling and motivating for the 20-year-old. He credits his teammates for making his role easier, saying their trust and support have been crucial to his growth.

Influences and Mentors

Shein’s development has also been shaped by coaches Andrew Owor, Charles Onen and Arthur Ngolobe “Kapale”, whose guidance has pushed him to improve. He acknowledges the Buffaloes family for making him feel at home and values the confidence his teammates have shown in him. Former players and mentors such as Rasul Abiriga and Matthew Musasizi have also played key roles in his journey, while Kyadondo Rugby Club has greatly influenced his development.

“A special mention to my uncle has been my rock throughout my rugby career, supporting me through every high and low,” Shein said. “Words can’t truly express my gratitude for his unwavering presence.”

Rising Through the National Ranks

Representing the Uganda Under-20 side, the Rising Stars, proved to be a major stepping stone. The experience prepared him for the pace, physicality and tactical demands of senior rugby.

Reaching the Premiership Final

Reaching the 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership final with Toyota Buffaloes is a dream come true for Shein. After suffering heartbreak last season, when the team narrowly missed out, the squad used that disappointment as motivation. He believes the bond among the players and their belief in one another have carried them through difficult moments. The 2026 Premiership finals will be Buffaloes resurgence to the finals after almost 13 years.

Continuing to Improve

The young scrum-half continues to work on improving his game management and vision. Locally, he admires Aaron Ofoyrwoth as a scrum-half, while England’s Alex Mitchell and Bath Rugby’s Ben Spencer are among the international players he studies closely.

Future Ambitions

Looking ahead, Shein’s biggest ambition is to represent Uganda at senior national team level. For now, his focus remains on helping Toyota Buffaloes achieve greater success and writing a new chapter in the club’s history.

Advice for Younger Players

His advice to aspiring players is simple: remain disciplined, trust the process and never stop learning.

A Story of Resilience

Hussein Shein’s rise from a pandemic enforced break to a Premiership finalist reflects the resilience, patience and dedication that continue to define one of Uganda rugby’s most promising young stars. We can’t wait to see in the finals and beyond.
