Uganda rugby is set for a packed weekend, 10-11 July 2026, with two major events on the calendar: the seventh edition of Gorilla 7s in Kabale and the Herbert Wafula Memorial 7s in Busia.

Gorilla 7s: Rugby, Development and Tourism in Kigezi
Gorilla 7s returns to Kabale as one of the most distinctive events on Uganda’s rugby calendar. Formerly known as the Kigezi High Altitude 7s, the tournament has grown into a recognised platform for rugby development in south-western Uganda.
Today, Friday 10th July features age grade action for primary and secondary school teams. Saturday 11th July hosts the senior men’s and women’s competitions. Sunday will close with tourism activities.
Defending champions Walukuba Barbarians and Thunderbirds return to protect their titles. The men’s field also includes Kigezi Silverbacks, Rams, Uganda Rugby 7s Select, 1000 Hills, Makerere Impis, Toyota Buffaloes, Uganda Rugby 7s Academy, KIU Crows, and Platinum Credit Heathens.

In the women’s draw, Kigezi Queens, Thunderbirds, Ewes, Rukinzo Women RFC, and Kisoro Jaguars are confirmed.
The tournament also doubles as part of the Uganda Rugby 7s development pathway, giving young and emerging players exposure as they work their way into the system.
Kabale Stadium will host all matches. Beyond rugby, fans can enjoy hiking and Lake Bunyonyi boat cruises on Sunday.
Herbert Wafula Memorial 7s: Honouring a Rugby Giant in Busia
Attention shifts to Busia Integrated Primary School Playgrounds on Saturday 11th July for the Herbert Wafula Memorial 7s.
The tournament has attracted 13 confirmed teams from Uganda and Kenya. Kenya will be represented by Nambale, Border Rucks, Andeliza, Border Pythons, and Mumias RFC. Uganda will be represented by Busitema Boons, Bududa Dragons, Hippos, Walukuba, Soroti Raptors, Bugiri Chiefs, Bugweri Raiders, and Bodondo Rugby.

The Late Wafula, who passed away in November 2023, was a player, captain, coach, URU Rugby Manager, World Rugby Educator, and Black Pirates Club Secretary. He captained the Rugby Cranes 7s and 15s between 1999 and 2002 and led Uganda to its first wins over Kenya in both formats.
After the final whistle, players, friends, and fans will gather at Ba Booze Tavern, Peace Complex opposite Rand Hotel, for an evening of stories, music, and fellowship in his memory.
A Weekend of Rugby Past and Future
Together, the two events underline the growing strength of rugby in Uganda, one looking to the future through development and competition, the other honouring the past through remembrance.
