Eyes On The Prize: Rugby Africa Women’s Cup 2026

Lady Rugby Cranes XVs are in full preparation mode as they gear up for the Rugby Africa Women’s Cup, Performance Division set for May 21–31 in Nairobi, Kenya. Under the guidance of head coach Muhammad Athiyo, the National side has intensified its build-up with structured training sessions held at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds, and Kampala Rugby Grounds.

Since taking over from Coach Charles Onen in February, Athiyo has instilled a high-performance culture centered on fitness, discipline, and tactical sharpness.

In the Camp: Energy, Competition, and Cohesion

The atmosphere in camp is vibrant, competitive, and united, with players pushing each other daily for selection in the final squad. Team manager Dorcus Mundua Asiimire notes the growing belief within the group: “The ladies understand the challenge ahead and are fully committed to achieving our targets. The energy and focus in camp are exactly what we need.”

Leadership within camp remains strong. Captain who will lead the team will be officially named on Sunday alongside the final squad. Angella Nanyonjo who led the team in previous encounters, continues to provide guidance, and experience during preparations.

After securing bronze in the previous edition, the Lady Cranes XVs are determined not just to compete, but to solidify their place among the continent’s elite. “We are now at the table with the big players in Africa, and intend to stay here,” Dorcus emphasized. “Every session, every drill is geared towards maintaining our place in the Performance Division.”
