A Busy Weekend Awaits

Uganda rugby will be active on several fronts this Saturday and Sunday, with Age grade rugby preparations, Legends action, Regional Development teams’ participation, domestic sevens and support to the Pirates, all on the calendar.

At Kampala Rugby Grounds, Uganda’s U20 Select side will face a Premiership Select team in a trial match ahead of the 2026 Legends Cup. The fixture offers an important test for the U20 team as it continues its buildup to the U20 Barthes Cup, which will be hosted at Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku from 5–16 August.

The trial match will be followed by the 2026 Legends Cup return leg, where Uganda Rugby Legends host Legends by Nondescripts. Uganda Legends go into the contest holding a narrow 16–15 aggregate advantage after their historic 16–15 win in Mombasa on 6 June, and will be hoping to retain the Cup on home soil for the first time since its inauguration.

Both side feature some of East Africa’s best known former internationals, Legends by Nondies arrive determined to overturn the deficit and reclaim the title. The fixture continues to underline the value of the veterans’ platform, which keeps former players involved in the game while also offering a space for welfare and networking.

More action will come from the Uganda Emerging Cranes men’s and women’s 7s development squads who are already in Burundi for the inaugural Burundi Regional 7s, where they will be in action in Bujumbura. Sanctioned by Rugby Afrique, the one day tournament will be played in a round robin format and will feature Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and hosts Burundi in both the men’s and women’s categories.

Uganda is the only Division One side in the competition, while the other three nations are Division Two sides. The event is expected to provide valuable international exposure for emerging players as they continue their development within Uganda’s Sevens programme.

The rugby weekend will also include the return of the Busiro Rugby 7s Festival at Busambaga Rugby Grounds in Entebbe, where Mongers RFC will host Season 4 of the one day event. The tournament returns after a year’s absence and will feature 10 men’s teams and 4 women’s teams, with action starting at 8:30am and ending with an award ceremony at 7:00pm.

Taken together, Saturday’s events reflect the scale of activity within Ugandan rugby, from junior development and veterans’ competition to regional exposure and club sevens. It is a day that underlines both the game’s present momentum and the pathways being built for its future.

Sunday morning will see the Ugandan Rugby Community gather at Kampala Rugby Grounds for the Sydney Gongodyo Memorial Walk against Mob Action, this walk comes in 30 days after the unfortunate murder of the Late Rugby Cranes’ and Stanbic Black Pirates player Sydney Gongodyo on the 5th of June 2026.
