Kampala, Uganda – May 1, 2026 – Uganda Rugby successfully hosted its 2026 Annual General Meeting  at Hotel Africana, marking a pivotal moment for the sport’s development in the country. Attended by key stakeholders, members, and rugby enthusiasts, the event celebrated achievements, reviewed strategic progress, and elected fresh leadership to drive Uganda rugby forward.

A standout highlight was the elective session, where members voted to expand representation on the Executive Committee. In a closely contested race, Phionah Karungi emerged victorious against Sarah Nahabi, securing her position as the Second Women’s representative. This addition strengthens gender inclusivity, and ensures diverse voices shape the Union’s future.

National team captains Peace Lekuru, and Byron Oketayot, were appointed as Athlete Representatives by the Uganda Rugby President Mr. Godwin Kayangwe, and approved by the Uganda Rugby Executive. The trio joins existing Excom members in strengthening the Committee’s capacity to address player welfare, development pathways, and governance matters with firsthand athlete insight, and inclusivity.

Beyond the appointments, delegates passed key motions that shaped the day’s proceedings. The adoption of the new constitution backed by clubs such as Rams, Hippos, Gulu City Falcons, Kigezi Queens and Nile Rapids signals a move toward stronger governance structures aligned with international standards.

Stakeholders widely praised the transparency and inclusiveness of the AGM process, noting that the integration of athlete voices into leadership posts positions Uganda Rugby for progressive growth. The developments are expected to enhance accountability, strengthen alignment with global rugby frameworks, and accelerate the advancement of Rugby in Uganda.

The AGM also featured insightful discussions on finances, strategies, development programs, and upcoming competitions, setting an ambitious agenda for 2026 and beyond. URU extends its gratitude to Hotel Africana, Voyager Global, Nile Special, RockBoom and MTN Momo for the continued support.

Uganda Rugby President commended the members for their active participation and visionary choices. “Today’s outcomes reflect our collective dedication to building a robust, inclusive rugby ecosystem in Uganda. With Fiona Karungi, Byron Oketayot, and Peace Lekuru joining the Executive, we are poised for greater achievements on, and off the field” Mr. Godwin stated.
