Game Week 5 Review

Match day five of the Uganda Rugby Premiership delivered dramatic results across the men’s, and women’s competitions with big victories, tight contests, and a few teams continuing to struggle for form as the season gathers momentum.

Nile Rapids win against Black Pearls
The biggest headline of the weekend came in the women’s competition where Nile Rapids stunned Black Pearls 25-17, securing their first ever Premiership victory over the defending champions.
Rapids produced a composed and clinical performance built on teamwork and discipline. Justin Anguchia led the charge with two tries, while Jemima Namukose capitalized on a loose ball to score another crucial try that helped extend Rapids’ lead.
Tina Akello the Flyhalf delivered a masterclass, controlling the tempo of the match and adding ten vital points from the boot to guide Rapids to the historic win.

Elsewhere in the women’s games, Ewes edged Panthers 29–20 in an entertaining contest, while Thunderbirds claimed a narrow 10–5 victory over Avengers, a result that could have implications in the race for the top positions on the table.

Rhinos Break Their Duck Against Walukuba
In the men’s competition, Rhinos finally secured their first win of the season, edging Walukuba Barbarians 19–17 in a tightly contested match. The result will provide a major boost for the Rhinos as they look to build momentum after a difficult start to the campaign.

Toyota Buffaloes Stun the Platinum Credit Heathens
One of the standout results of the game week came at Kyadondo where Buffaloes defeated Heathens 12–7. In what is traditionally a fiercely contested fixture, Buffaloes showed resilience and defensive discipline to frustrate the former champions and secure a valuable win.

Stanbic Black Pirates Dominate against the Plascon Mongers
Stanbic Black Pirates delivered one of the most commanding performances of the weekend, thrashing Mongers 61–23. Pirates’ attacking display proved too much for Mongers, who struggled to contain the relentless waves of pressure.

KCB KOBs Triumph in High-Scoring Battle
At Makerere, KCB KOBs defeated Impis 34–24 in an exciting and high-scoring clash. Both sides showcased great attacking rugby with Impis responding closely to created score margins. KOBs’ ability to break defence quickly positioned them for the win.

Warriors and Kakira Continue to Struggle
It was another difficult weekend for Warriors and Kakira, who both lost in Game Week 5. Hippos defeated Warriors 20–7, while Victoria Sharks comfortably beat Kakira 37–8, leaving the two sides still searching for consistency this season.
